A team of nine volunteers from Markon spent the week of December 11th in Houston, TX rebuilding homes in the aftermath of hurricane Harvey.
Led by Steve Genn, the team joined Rebuilding Together Houston to restore structural integrity and livable conditions to two homes in East Houston.
Upon arrival, the first home had already been gutted and treated for mold, but the sub-floor and supporting joists were for the most part in terrible condition. We quickly got to work and by the end of the week had restored the structural foundation and installed new sub-flooring in 3 bedrooms, the bathroom, dining room, kitchen and main hallway. The "foundation crew" was led by Rob, Kyle, Steve and Pat, and the homeowner, Ms. Williams, could not have been happier with her new, solid master bedroom floor!
In addition, we had a rockstar drywall crew led by Rory aka "Wolf," Mitchell and Joe. They had no small task, as all of the drywall in the house 4' above the floor had been removed during the muck and gut of the house. They installed new waterproofing, insulation, and drywall in the entire home. Joe put the finishing touches on the drywall, and prepped the home for a paint crew!
The second home started off as a smaller project, but quickly grew into a bigger construction job. Jackie and Michelle tackled this home head-on by demolishing and removing moldy cabinetry, moldy drywall, a warped shower stall, and shower doors. During demo, they realized the joists underneath the bathroom needed work as well and provided the support needed. They were able to build back all of the walls and sub-floor by the end of the week!
Our Markon team was humbled to work with Rebuilding Together Houston. While we did make an impact on 2 homes, there are many more households affected in the greater Houston area. We plan to maintain our relationship with RTH as they continue to provide relief to #HomesAfterHarvey.
